Navigating Coronavirus — August 26

  • NEW NAVIGATOR POLL >> Americans overwhelmingly feel that Trump’s attack on the Postal Service is politically motivated — as nearly three in five say Trump is opposing USPS funding to help with his re-election.
  • MORE >> A majority of Americans also believe Trump’s assault on USPS is an attempt to suppress votes because he knows that, if more Americans vote, the more likely he is to lose the election.

Message guidance on the latest developments with President Trump’s handling of the crisis.

  • WHAT THEY WANT YOU TO THINK: “It takes a true leader to solve problems,” the convention’s primetime began. “COVID-19: While others criticized without solutions, President Trump’s swift action saved lives.”
  • THE REALITY: Trump downplayed the danger of the virus early on, ignored expert warnings, and failed to deliver on promises. He repeatedly said it would disappear but here’s the truth >> “The U.S. has the worst coronavirus outbreak in the world.‘The numbers don’t lie,’ Dr. Fauci says.”
  • WHAT THEY WANT YOU TO THINK: “’This is a powerful therapy,’ Trump said, describing the authorization as ‘a very historic breakthrough.’ Trump and aides cast the news as a major therapeutic breakthrough.”
  • THE REALITY: “FDA Walks Back Claim of Dramatic Benefit From Covid Therapy”
  • MORE >> By 28 points (64%-36%), Americans do not think Trump’s leadership helped control the coronavirus pandemic.

  • Despite the ongoing debate around the Postal Service, Americans remain overwhelmingly favorable toward USPS and say they rely on the Postal Service for things like bills and prescription drugs. A third of Americans feel like mail has been delayed more than usually recently.
  • By 33 points (60%-27%), Americans support fully funding the USPS, with 60% also saying that it should remain publicly funded.
  • By 27 points (58%-31%), Americans are more concerned that USPS funding cuts will prevent millions of Americans from getting their everyday needs than threatening the integrity of the election.

The latest on how the economic crisis sparked by coronavirus is being fueled by President Trump’s actions and years of conservative economic policies, focusing today on Trump’s continued obstruction of economic support and the impact that is having on workers and the economy.

  • Instead of allowing a clean extension of the emergency unemployment benefits that would keep the economic lifeline for 30 million workers, Trump’s convoluted executive order cuts incomes by $1,200 a month — if it ever gets implemented at all.
  • A month since the executive order was announced, the vast majority of unemployed workers haven’t seen a single penny in support.
  • As demand has fallen and the economic crisis has continued for far longer than it needed to, businesses continue their “unprecedented mass layoffs and furloughs” — and it could get much worse.
  • READ >> “Latinx workers — particularly women — face devastating job losses in the COVID-19 recession”
  • REMINDER >> “Coronavirus has already dealt a blow to Social Security’s finances. Trump’s payroll tax holiday could make it worse”
  • So lawmakers must continue working to help workers and families through the immediate impacts of this crisis — most importantly, by quickly passing the $600 expanded unemployment benefit extension.
  • And they should get to work fixing the massive structural problems in Trump’s economy that have been so clearly exposed and have made this economic crisis so much worse and longer-lasting than it needed to be.

  • CONVENTION BUMP ALERT >> Joe Biden is experiencing a post-convention bump in popularity, with his net favorability increasing 10 points in two weeks, and a majority of Americans say they had a positive impression of the Democratic convention.
