Navigating Coronavirus — May 14

It’s been 77 days since President Trump said we’d soon have zero cases in the U.S. We now have 1.430,000 cases and 85,100 deaths — more deaths than any other country in the world.

TOP TREND

  • Trump’s coronavirus approval hits new low: 41%. It’s even worse among Independents: only 28% approve of his handling of coronavirus.

THE LATEST

Message guidance on the latest developments with President Trump’s handling of the crisis.

1. TRUMP IS OVERRULING EXPERTS AND ENDANGERING AMERICANS.

Not only does Trump refuse to listen to experts on how to solve this crisis, he is actively overruling them to push a dangerous agenda that could get more Americans sick and cause more deaths.

  • WAPO: Trump says he ‘totally’ disagrees with Fauci on reopening schools >> “‘I think that we have to open our schools,’ Trump said in the interview, which will air in full Thursday morning. ‘Young people are very, little affected by this. … Now, we want to do it safely, but we also want to do it as quickly as possible. We can’t keep going on like this. You’re having bedlam already in the streets. You can’t do this. We have to get it open. I totally disagree with him on schools.’”

Since the beginning, Trump has ignored experts and downplayed the crisis, and now Americans are paying the price.

  • Trump fired a critical vaccine expert. Today, Dr. Rick Bright will testify in the House about how he tried to warn Trump early about the severity of the outbreak and was ignored, then was fired for not pushing his unproven medical theories.

2. TRUMP’S ACTIONS COULD THROW US INTO A DEEP ECONOMIC DEPRESSION.

One day after House Democrats put out a plan to stimulate the economy by helping workers and families, Trump’s Federal Reserve Chairman warned that failure to deliver more stimulus could significantly hurt the economy.

  • POWELL: “Additional fiscal support could be costly, but worth it if it helps avoid long-term economic damage and leaves us with a stronger recovery.”

Despite praising Powell yesterday, Trump is ignoring his warning — joining fellow Republicans to stand in the way of helping to save the economy.

  • AP: “No urgency for new coronavirus aid package, McConnell says”

BE CLEAR >> Democrats are fighting to save the economy and get more money directly into the hands of struggling Americans. Trump and Republicans are ignoring the experts’ warnings, just like they did on the outbreak, and now risk throwing us into a depression.

  • Democrats’ bill will help prevent teachers, police, and emergency responders from being laid off across America, get frontline heroes the support they need, and give hard-hit Americans another financial lifeline.

  • Americans are concerned that Trump is failing to re-open safely, and it could harm the economy. They’re more concerned that his failure to enact public health solutions and his downplaying of a “second wave” will make the economic crisis worse. His earlier actions leading to higher unemployment are less concerning.
  • A number of Trump’s actions give people serious concerns. The most impactful, especially among Independents: he ignored warnings about the virus in early intelligence briefings, he blocked the release of CDC guidelines for how to re-open safely, and he suggested people inject themselves with bleach to treat coronavirus.
  • Top concerns about Trump’s behavior continue to focus on downplaying, making himself the center of attention, and blaming others.

ECONOMIC CRISIS IN CONTEXT

The latest on how the economic crisis sparked by coronavirus is actually fueled by years of President Trump’s conservative economic policies, focusing today on the need for policymakers to go beyond just immediate relief.

Trump and his allies need to work with the House to give workers and families immediate relief, but policymakers should also put in place systems to ensure that the support doesn’t go away before this crisis is actually over.

  • Now that Wall Street and big businesses have been bailed out, Trump and his allies in Congress are dragging their feet and are even holding support for workers and families hostage to protect massive corporations that are putting their workers and customers in danger to juice their bottom lines.

ONE MORE THING . . .

WATCH AND SHARE >> Trump says we couldn’t have seen this coming, but presidents for years prepared for a crisis. This failure is Trump’s.
